REGATTA EVENTS

OFFICIAL PROGRAMME VARIETY OF ATTRACTIONS THE METHOD OF CONTROL Almost without a break since the foundation of Auckland the anniversary of the province has been celebrated by the holding of a regatta on the AVaitemata Harbour.. As the city has grown this event has developed into one of the largest regattas held anywhere in the world and has become synonomoug with Anniversary Day. It is therefore fitting that yacht racing and motorboat competitions should take a prominent place among the centennial celebrations to be held next year. Ac- : cordinglv special attention has been given to the planning of a series of | j aquatic events that promise to eclipse j i anything of the kind ever seen on the: i Waitemata. With a full programme of celebra- | ; tions event? next year, embracing every \ kind of activity, both ashore and j afloat, it has been necessary to choose the dates for the regattas with care to avoid clashing with other major activiI ties and the period in late .January I and early February has been allotted to the water events. Only One Authority i Discussing this position yesterday, Mr. K. I<. S. Usmar, one of the joint permanent secretaries of~the Auckland ProvinciaJ Centennial Council, said that considerable confusion would be caused if anv attempt were made to arrarge ! any regattas or sailing contests outside i those already officially approved. He ex- | plained that under the constitution of 1 the Auckland Provincial Centennial I Council there was only one authorised ! and recognised body responsible for the i organisation and control of the aqnatio i and waterfront events connected with I Auckland's centennial celebrations. | That body was the marine activities i sub-committee of the Auckland Metroi potitan Centennial Executive, which I had already considerable thought 1 to the organisation of adequate water ; events and had marie satisfactory proI gross with its plans. The only proi gramme of aquatic events which would j bo recognised was that submitted by | the sub-committee. The Allotment o! Dates The programme compilation section ! dealing with the official celebrations had ! already allotted suitable dates, the ! events being yet down for January 20, ; when there would be power-boat races; I .January 2!», the date for the Centennial ' Regatta; January 30, when there would ! bo a representation of tho landing of | Governor Hobson; February 3 and Feb- ' ruary 10, these being allotted for full range regattas for the western and j eastern yacht clubs respectiyelv; and j February 17, when the Manukau Har- ! bour Regatta would be held. It was also explained that it was i under the direction of the t metropolitan | executive that the chairman of the j Auckland Yacht and Motor-Boat Association, Mr. C. H. i'almer, had ex- | tended an invitation to yachtsmen i throughout the world to take part in tho centennial regatta events. EXHIBITION BOOKINGS AMUSEMENT PARK PROGRESS I [IJY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON, Friday "Amusement park bookings for side | shows and games of skill at the C'enr I tennial Exhibition have closed, and the | park is now fully taken up," said Mr. | Henry Self, representative of the j amusement park concessionary comj pany, to-day. Fie said he was satisfied I that he had arranged for a collection of I devices and entertainments that would | give the New Zealand public all they ! could wish for. 90 per cent being eni tirelv new to the Dominion. ! Mr. Seff said his men were working ; well within tho dime schedule and there i would be no difficulty in having the | park ready by the opening date.
