NORTHERN PLANS

MAORI PARTICIPATION CO-OPERATION ASSURED OUTCOME OF LONG DISCUSSION [by tei.egraph —own connEsroxnENT] WHAXOATtEI. Friday "We have started with the pakehns; to withdraw now would be to shame the Maori people," said Mrs. E. Randall, a niece of Princess Te Puea, at a meeting of the leaders of the native race held in Whan&arei this afternoon, when the question of the participation of the Maoris in the Centennial celebrations was discussed. The Maoris in the Whangarei County had put forward a proposal that a Maori hostel be established at Whangarei. but this was not approved for a subsidy. The Maoris had already raised about £7O. They have now been informed that all money raised must be paid into the central Centennial funds. This led to the calling of the meeting today. The registrar of the Native Land Board in Auckland, Mr. J. H. Robertson, presided. The Mayor of Whangarei, Mr. W. Jones, was present and sought the co-operation of the Maoris. Finally, after four hours of discussion, resolutions were carried expressing confidence in the present Maori Centennial committee, with Mr. L. Davis as its chairman, and Mr. Takiri Purii;i as organiser, and deciding that the committee should co-operate with the pakeha committee. The Maoris, especially the women, were wholeheartedly behind the Centennial celebrations and intended to take their part, said Mrs. Randall at tho conclusion of the discussion. The proposal to establish a Maori hostel at Whangarei is not being lost sight of, and the Maori people intend to pursue this project at the conclusion of the Centennial. Support was promised by Mr. Jones and Mr. Robertson.
