NORTHCOTE CHURCH
eightieth anniversary OLDEST ON THE NORTH SHORE The patronal festival of St. John the Baptist Church at Northcote is to be celebrated to-morrow. This is the oldest church on the northern side of the harbour, having been planned, built and dedicated by Bishop Selwvn in 18-59. On St. John's Day, 80 years ago, Bishop Sehvyn was rowed across the harbour by two watermen for the consecration ceremony. „.-'lho transcript was added to the church in 18S2, and was dedicated by Bishop Cowie* when the Rev. F. G. Evans (afterwards archdeacon) was the vicar. The builder of this new portion fras the late Mr. John C. Taylor, whose association with the church dated from IS7JL The bell and a portion of the Erounds behind the church were given by the late Mr. James Faulkner. The patronal festivals will be celebrated by special services to-morrow, tthen Archdeacon Hawkins will be the preacher in the morning, and Archbishop Averill will conduct a confirmation service in the evening. The present vicar is the Rev. F. C. Truman, who took charge in 1938.
