The trial grass was used for galloping. Happy Heels and Yours Truly finished well in front of Kena nt the end of a mile after running the last seven furlongs in 1.34 2-5 and the last four in 51 2-os. Happy Heels worked well and may soon have a change of luck. No rider lias been engaged for him at Otaki. Yours Truly, although he has not raced since the autumn, has been in strong work for some timo and is forward. A. Jenkins will bo his rider at Otaki.

Toper and Good Sun schooled over the pony hurdles. Toper went well in spite ot' a mistake at the third and was better than Good Sun, although the latter is improving. R. A. Hawkings iias been schooling Good Sun and will ride him at Otaki.

Dungarvan worked once round at a strong pace. Ho appears to have improved as a result of his recent racing. Matoru was not galloped but was worked on the load in the middle. The best of the morning was 52s for four furlongs by Gay Lord, who finished ahead of Defy. Considering the conditions, it was a good effort for maidens. Defy is a three-year-old mare by Defoe and is being trained by E. Burgess. She has not yet raced. Lustra! and Might galloped a mile in 1.50. Lustral has novor worked better than at present and has built up into a solid, muscular horse. Liane was given pace work. She lias been showing decided improvement since the tracks became soft. Debliam is another who is working with more freedom and ran the last four of live furlongs in 54 2-ss. Hunting Squire finished well clear of Wakarara at the end of live furlongs in 1.8. The former handled the going well. Another maiden in T. R. George's stable, Silver Spear, who came from the north with a reputation, has failed to show anything special oil the track since she has been at Trentham, but she works freely and may go well in a race. She will have her first start at Otaki. INCREASE IN BETTING THE SEASON'S RETURNS With returns for meetings held in May, June and July to be added, the amount put through the totalisators at meetings under the Rules of Racing during the first nine months of the current season totalled £4,777,929 10s. In addition, the sum of €171,989 was invested in trotting events on racing club programmes. For the corresponding period of the 1937-38 season, the respective amounts invested were £4,298.265 on galloping events and £155.234 on trotting races. The aggregate betting for the year was nearly £5,290,000, which figure is sure to be substantially exceeded bv Julv 31. TROTTING BREVITIES NEWS FROM ALL SOURCES Present favourites for the three-year-old classic races next season are Highland Scott and Sir Julien, both winners of two good races, while Three Tens, Gallant Chief and Ordnance are expected to show n good moasuro of improvement in the spring. The death is reported of tho Logan Pointer mare, Colone Pointer, the dam of Kingcraft, Village Guy and Poker Face. Kingcraft won 14 races and £0292 in stakes, while in a comparatively short time. Village Guy won £22.'53. Colcno Pointer's dam was Queen Colo, by King Colo, from Norico, who left 'numerous fino racehorses and brood mares.
