SYDNEY STRIKE
ENGINEERING SHOPS SERIOUS DISLOCATION LARGE FIRMS INVOLVED DESIRE FOR NEW AWARD By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright (Received May 2S, 5.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, May 'JS Serious dislocation of the metals trades and engineering industries has occurred as the result of a strike of 150 engine-drivers and firemen in 10 big engineering workshops. A mass meeting of ironworkers representing 1500 men in the shops concerned decided yesterday to strike in sympathy with the drivers and firemen. Some of the firms involved are Mort's Dock, the Cockatoo Dockyard, the Clyde Engineering Company, Hadfield's, Limited, and Babcock and Wilcox, Limited. The dispute hinges on the drivers' and firemen's claims for better wages and conditions and a feeling that the employers are obstructing the men's objective, the obtaining of a new award embodying better pay. The strikers comprise the koy men who drive cranes and operate steam and generating plants for electricity.
