NOTES ON RUNNING

GADGER JUST BEATEN GOOD EFFORT BY HOMILY WILDFLOWER PERFORMS WELL [nv TELEGRAPH —own correspondent] HAWERA, Saturday Coining with a great run over the last three furlongs, Power Chief won the Manawapou Hurdles in the last few strides. He was ridden rather confidently, his rider appearing to think that the pacemaker Gadger would tiro. As it was Power Chief was required to register a fine performance. Gadger improved on his first day's form and mado a gallant attempt to lead all the way. Hanover looked a winner at the home turn, but was steadied ,by his weight. Disturbed finished fairly well in fourth place, but Rryce Street displayed no dash. Hokumai fell at the second fence. Te Takina Surprises

Beginning smartly, Te Takina led practically all tho way in the Shorts Hack Handicap. She was well clear entering the straight and ran on much better than previously to pay doublo figures. She gave T. Kilgour, an apprentice attached to H. Dulieu's stable, his first winning ride. Rehearsal was always handy and looked likely to win when he challenged To Takina inside tho distance, but his finish was rather disappointing. Dawn Star, who was one of the pacemakers, hung on fairly well, but Little Ruse just got up to deadlieat for third with her. Pretty. Lass began slowly and was too far back when tho field settled down. Vadanoe was closer at tho fiuish than at any other stage. Dorak was hopelessly left. After being a long way back for tho greater part of the journey, Homily came through in the straight to win the Mokoia Handicap going away. It was a splendid effort and she is right bapk to form. Diamond Cutter also mado up a good deal of ground over the last half-mile to gain second. Tho win favourite Footloose had to cover too much ground and just snatched third from War Lap, who was always in the picture. Tosh, wh'o was second most of tho way, weakened at the finish. Airing, who was last in tho early stages, was fairly well up in sixth place at tho end. Champion Hack Contest

Confidently handled by It. Ireland, Brazil won tho Champion Hack Plato in easy fashion. He moved up to the leader passing the five furlongs and was in charge at the home turn. Over the last furlong he gave nothing n chance, fairly romping in by three lengths. Nereus was ahvays handy, but was required to cover a little extra ground at the home turn. He finished solidly. The Cardinal came from a rear position to fill third. Cuisinier had every'chance. He had a perfect run on the rails all tho way and followed Brazil into the straight, but his weight told at tho finish. Hinerawe and Windsor Chief ran good races, but Verey Lights was beaten before the straight was reached.

Making his first appearance over country. Silk Sox won the Adamson Steeplechase in solid fashion. He gave a good exhibition of jumping, except for hitting the post and rails the second time. Lady Stella was always in the picture and appeared likely to win when she headed Silk Sox at the last fence, but Silk Sox finished too well for her. Riotous failed to stay, while Red Sun was in a sour mood. Highball, who was ridden with poor judgment, fell when running third at the second to last fence. Gadger ran off at the" first jump. Booklaw finished well back. Lady Stella was the first to show out, but Highball soon took command and led through the straight from Lady Stella, Riotous' and Silk Sox. There was little between this quartet racing into tho back, but Riotous began to drop out at the half-mile, where Red Sun made up a little ground. Lady Stella and Silk Sox were together at the last jump and in a good finish Silk Sox did the better to win by a length. Riotous was four lengths away third and Red Sun was fourth. Wildflower Improves Showing marked improvement on her first day's form, Wildflower won the Davidson Handicap in solid fashion. She ran up to the leaders running down the back and once into tho straight she took command to win by a length. Entail appeared most unlucky. His rider allowed him to become pocketed racing along the back, and he had to coiue round the field at the straight entrance. Entail finished splendidly, but had too much leeway to make up. Student Prince, who came into the picture at tho home turn, was a good third and Kena, who also finished solidly, was fourth. Toolev Street led into the straight with WildfloAver, but then weakened. Sergia had every chance, while Trebor ran a poor race. Siegmund finished well back. Silvanus took charge going out of tho straight, but along tho back she was joined by Tooley Street, who had moved up quickly, with Sergia Trebor at the head of the rest. Wildflower joined Tooley Street at the top and they led into the straight from Student Prince, Silvanus. Trebor and Sergia. Wildflower soon drooped looley Street and went on to win by a length from Entail, who came from the back. Student Prince was two lengths away third and Kena was fourth, looley Street and Sergia were tho next to "a hot favourite on both machines, Requiem justified the confidence reposed in her by winning the Borough Handicap, in a close finish. She had to cover extra ground and came on the outside in the straight. Young Charles acted up to his Waverley form and was in front 20 yards from the post. Le Toquet was handy to the leaders all the way and looked a winner inside the distance. Dark Eagle had every chance and onlv just headed Bronze .Step for fourth. Carmody and Silver Gift were prominent in the running, while Golden Orchid was running on strongly alter tailing the field most of the way.
