FIRE PROTECTION
MOVE AT MANUREWA UNIT TO BE ESTABLISHED SEQUEL TO RECENT OUTBREAK The establishment of a firo-fighting service in Manurewa was decided upon by the Manurewa Borough Council on Thursday night, when reports were submitted by the finance committee and the foreman, Mr. F. Sainty. This action has been taken as a result of the disastrous fire in the town on April 8, when damage to the extent of £12,000 was caused. The district's firefighting equpiment at that time consisted of about 500 ft. of hose and a hydrant. A reticulated water servico was completed in the town fully 12 months ago.
The Mayor, Mr. W. J. Ferguson, reported that he had conferred with the advisory superintendent of the United Fire Brigades' Association, Mr. T. J. Watts, who had recommended that certain equipment be acquired. In place of a fire engine a trailer''which could be transported by a motor vehicle was meantime recommended. .The finance committee recommended that the rates be adjusted by reducing the charge for interest and sinking fund on the water loan and adding the equivalent amount to the general rates. It was estimated that this would provide £3OO for the purchase of equipment. ' ... Members suggested that a public meeting be convened and _ a citizens committee be appointed with a view to raising funds to assist in the establishment of a brigado, and that course was adopted.
