ST. PAUL'S CATHEDRAL

Sir, —The very interesting article "How- Britain's cathedrals \rere built" by A.R.LB.A. in last Saturday's supplement contains one small error. The author states that the change to electricity in St. Paul's, London, was made only a few years ago. Actually this change was commenced in 1899 and completed about 1902. The work entailed an immense amount of planning in order not to destroy or interfere in any way with the fabric of the building. The fittings were all especially designed and made to blend with the architecture and each lighting point was supplied from two supply companies, so that in the event of a power failure from one company the cathedral would not be plunged in darkness. The work which cost over £15,000 was the gift of the American financier, Mr. Pierpont Morgan.
