TEMPORARY WORKERS
PUBLIC SERVICE MOVE MUCH DISSATISFACTION BETTER CONDITIONS SOUGHT [BY TKLKGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday A Canterbury Public Service Temporary Employees' Association was formed at a meeting in Christchurch. Temporary officers attending the meeting represented various departments. Workers in other departments in the city aro expected to join. The meeting was informed that temporary employees in other centres wero making a similar move and that it was anticipated that a large New Zealand movement would be the outcome. Reasons given for the formation of the association are that temporary workers have become a very largo percentage of the civil service personnel and that continual refusals have been rnado to accord to them wages and conditions approaching those enjoyed by civil servants, while award conditions are being? rigidly enforced by the Government in private concerns. Dissatisfaction is reported to be widespread and the Objects of the association as outlined are to bring these anomalies before the Federation of Labour and the Government. It is alleged that Government departments under the control of the Public Servico Commissioner have not fallen into line with the Government's policy of insisting on the adherence of award conditions relating to wages, hours and overtime which have been operative in industry for several years. A determined move will therefore be made to improve the working conditions of groups of temporary employees.
