THE PIHA CASE
HEARING NEXT WEEK TWO DAYS FOR EVIDENCE SYDNEY DETECTIVE CALLED The lower Court hearing of the Piha caso will begin next Tuesday morning and in all probability will not conclude until the following afternoon. A Press Association cable message received last night from Sydney stated that Detec-tive-Sergeant W. Alford, of the New South Wales police, will leave by the Aorangi to-day and arrive at Auckland next Monday to give evidence.
The two accused, Gordon Robert McKay, alias Tom Bowlands, wool and skin dealer, aged 43, and James Arthur Talbot, labourer, aged 38, both Australians, have already been jointly charged with improperly interfering with a dead human body, that of Patrick Henry Shine, at Auckland, on February 10, and "with wilfully setting fire to the dwelling-house of Fra,nk Carew-Thomas, thereby committing arson, at Piha on February 12. It iB understood that a good many witnesses will be called for the heax'ing next week. There is tho anticipation also that evidence to be given by several Crown witnesses will tako a considerable time.
