TIES OF FRIENDSHIP
BRITAIN AND SPAIN NEW ENVOY AT BURGOS BURGOS. April 11 The British Ambassador to Nationalist Spain, Sir Maurice Peterson, presenting his credentials to General Franco, said: "I come to a new Spain after years of long suffering through which Spain has merited world-wide sympathy." General Franco replied: "The new Spain with which you are about to become acquainted rises strongly after
serving the world by defeating international Bolshevism and rescuing faith in civilisation. "Spain is conscious of its historic responsibilities, and in renewing relations with countries like Britain, to which it is bound by ties of friendship based on geographical conditions, Spain is certain of recognition of her great sacrifices and loyal and sympathetic friendship in plans for the future. With this spirit you will find, on my part, the most sincere collaboration."
FRANCO'S PRISONERS LONDON, April 11 Spanish prisons contain 6000 Republicans, of whom 1600 are charged with capital offences, says the Madrid correspondent of the British United Press. Concentration camps hold 230,000 Republican soldiers.
