LATE MRS. T. DALZELL EXPERIENCES AS TEACHER AUCKLAND IN EARLY DAYS Many people who knew Auckland in the days of the Provincial Government, who joined boating parties starting from Wynyard Pier and who practised archery on the lawns at Government House will remember Mrs. Dalzell, widow of tho late Mr. Torn Dalzell, of the Bay of Plenty, formerly Miss Katherine Leach. The second of four sisters, Mrs. Dalzell, whose death took place in her homo at Stanmore, New South Wales, in her 88th year, lived at Parnell in tho 'seventies. The elder members of the family arrived in Auckland from Ireland first, tho younger members, who were at school in Dublin, following later in the Lady Jocelyn with the Katikati settlers. Mrs. Dalzell lived for some years in the Bay of Plenty, whore her sons were born, and experienced all tho alarms of the Tarawera eruptions and their aftermath.' With riiany other people, tho family removed further afield. Mrs. Dalzell joined tho staff of the Auckland Education Board and after experience in Auckland schools, she becamo infant mistress in the school at Opotiki. She resigned however in the early 'eighties to be married, but still retained her connection- with educational activities by becoming secretary to the school committee and also acting on bodies governing church and library work.
Some years later Mrs. Dalzell opened a private school in Auckland and subsequently she accepted charge of a native school in the Bay of Plenty. She paid a visit to England after which she returned to Matata. Her last years were spent in Australia, where her two sons, Messrs. Tim and Chambre Dalzell, had settled, one in Sydney and the other in Melbourne. Of her three sisters, she is survived by Mrs. Buckworth.
