WOMAN IN COURT
GAMING HOUSE CHARGE BETS WITH POLICE ALLEGED [by telegraph—own correspondent] WANGANUI, Tuesday A single woman, Freda Mary Lawson, was charged in the Magistrate's Court at Wanganui to-day with keeping a common gaming house at premises in Glasgow Street, before Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M. A plea of not guilty was made by Mr. C. P. Brown, who appeared for Lawson. Decision was reserved.
Detective-Sergeant J. K. Robertson, who prosecuted, said bets were taken bv a member of the police force on March 4 and March 9, when amounts of 2s 6d a net 5s were involved. When interviewed by Detective J. Murray, Lawson said that she took the bets only co oblige customers and rang them to a bookmaker, who was unaware she was taking bets. He thought thev were her own bets and those of her family. Detective Murray produced day . cards and a book with entries 111 it typical ot those made'by small bookmakers. Mr Brown submitted that there was no. case to answer, as the evidence was insufficient.
