DISTINGUISHED SCHOLAR

RESEARCH IN CYTOLOGY WORK IN AUSTRALIA The first research scholar from abroad to hold the recently established research fellowship at the women's college, the University of Sydney, is Dr. Ann Sanderson, who arrived at Sydney _on February 2;}. The branch of zoology in which Dr. Sanderson is interested is cytology, with particular reference to the processes underlying reproduction in snails and insects.

The scholarship was offered by the Women's College with the purpose of encouraging research scholars to visit Australia, to give them the opportunities for study there, and also in the interests of the college itself, it is hoped that the presence of distinguished scholars within the college will stimulate the interests of students toward scholarship, and tl:us enhance the dignity of the college beyond its function as a hostel for students.

Miss C. Wedgwood, the principal of the Women's College, said that Dr. Sanderson, besides her distinguished academic career, was a lecturer at the University of Dundee, and that her position was being kept open for her by the university until she had completed her two years' work in Australia. "We offered the research scholarship in biology or zoology," Miss Wedgwood said, '"because there is an extensive field in those subjects in Australia. We send many students and graduates abroad for research work, and Ave feel that in some measure we should do something to encourage scholars to come to Australia. The scholarship was advertised through the British Federation of University Women, and was open vo graduates of all British or American universities. The selection committee, which included Mrs. T. G. Osborii, formerly of Sydney, sent several recommendations to us, and Dr. Sanderson was selected lroin among these, and has accepted the two years' scholarship at the college." While in Sydney, Dr. Sanderson will work at the Zoology School at the University, will do some tutorial work, and particularly stimulate interest within the college in scholarship research. Among her hobbies are gardening and angling. Dr. Sanderson is a member oi the Soroptiinist Club of Dundee, unci has had her membership transferred to the Sydney club.
