FIFTY YEARS AGO
PARNELL INQUIRY RESULT The confession of the forger itvolved in the Parnell case 50 years ago led to that statesman being entirely cleared of the charges against him. The following is an extract from an editorial of the New Zealand Hebald of March 1, 1889: "We do not think anyone can regret that the result of the Parnell Inquiry Commission has been to show that the letters attributed to Mr. Parnell, and which were relied upon to substantiate his connection with the extreme and murderous section of the Irish agitators, have proved to be gross forgeries. It is now clear that the Times hi»& been victimised by several unprincipled scoundrels, and that as yet nothing lias been established showing that Parneli has given countenance to the many outrages that have accompanied the Irish agitation for Home Rule. We are glad of this, and so we are sure, will evers right-thinking man be."
