HAMILTON AIRPORT

RUKUHIA SITE APPROVED INSPECTION BY MINISTER [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] HAMILTON, Tuesday A statement that the airport site at Rukuhia had been recommended by his department as the best in the Hamilton district was made by the Minister of .Public Works, the Hon. R. Semple, after a visit to the aerodrome to-day. A complete survey had been made by his department and,.all the necessary data had been passed on to the Civil Aviation Department for its approval. The decision now rested with that department and when that was forthcoming the next step would be for those concerned at Hamilton to have the site vested in a local airport authority. The question of the construction of the aerodrome would be for the Public Works Department. It would bo constructed in such a manner that it could be used for defence purposes in case of emergency. It was to be hoped, tho Minister said, that it would never bo necessary for it to be used for that purpose, but it was necessary to construct with that possibility, in view. It would be necessary to bring in more land and from 150,000 to 200,000 yards of material would have to be shifted. One of tho main factors would be extensive drainage, and the surface would have to bo capable of standing up to heavy bombers.
