NEW ZEALAND TITLES CONTESTS AT MILFORD HIGH STANDARD DISPLAYED NELSON SHIELD TO MARANUI The high standard of efficiency of surf life-saving clubs in»the Dominion was shown at Milford Beach during the week-end, when the national championships were decided under the control of the New Zealand Surf LifeJ Saving Association (Auckland). Nineteen clubs, inchiding two girls' clubs, participated, and included five associations from as far south at Otago. The competitors numbered nearly 200. Ideal weather conditions prevailed on Saturday but, although the afternoon was'fine, rain marred the meeting yesterday, both from a spectators' and financial viewpoint. The meeting was opened on Saturday afternoon by the president of the Surf Life-Saving Association (Auckland), Dr. T. H. Pettit, who extended a welcome to the visiting teams. The president of the New Zealand Association, Mr. P. F. Coira, of Wellington, replied on behalf of the visitors. Mr. W. J. Lyon, M.P. for Waitemata, was also. presentSpectacular Event The -chief attraction yesterday afternoon was the march-past championship, in which 14 teams took part, including Milford Girls and Waitemata Girls. The event was witnessed by about 5000 spectators and it was a memorable spectacle. The sun-tanned life-savers, clad in vari-coloured costumes and caps, with fluttering pennants of the various teams borne by stalwart standard-bearers, marched with smartness and precision, their bearing being evidence of conscientious practice. The girls', teams acquitted themselves equally as efficiently as the men and they received special rounds of applause from the spectators. So evenly matched appeared the contestants that the judges were presented with a hard task in deciding upon the winning team. Lyall Bay, the holders, gained the decision from Waitemata, with Ohawe .third. After the two heats of the junior rescue and resuscitation-championships for the William Henry Memorial Cup had been decided, Maranui lodged a protest against Lyall Bay. winner of the second heat. The protest was upheld and it was decided to cancel the first heat, which was won by New Brighton, and hold the event again. The result was a victory for Maranui, St. Clair being second and Lyall Bay third. Welcome to the Teams The Mayor of Auckland, Sir Ernest Davis, and the Hon. P. C. Webb, Minister of Labour, who arrived at the beach in Sir Ernest's yacht Morewa from Kawau Island, were introduced to the gathering yesterday by Dr. Pettit.
