RED CAT SOLID

_j OLD BILL JUST WINS

MATAROA'S NEW OWNER

SUDAN RUNS UNLUCKILY [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] PALMERSTON NORTH, Friday Brazil, tho favourite for the Maiden Plate, began best, but he soon drifted and finished on again in seventh place. Parian made tho running, but in the straight Haliey then went into the lead and ran home a comfortable winner from Cuisinier, who came from tho rear to boat Prediction. Barabbas was fourth, then came Parian, Cherrypicker and Brazil. Improved form may bo expected from Cherrypicker, who has not raced for a couple of seasons. He came from a long way back. Cuisinier, Barabbas and Brazil should all do bettor shortly. Parian, in his first race, showed a deal of pace. Mr. A. H. Burt, the former hurdle jockey and tho new owner of Mataroa, decisively won tho High-weight Handicap. Great Quex and Twilight Song sot a pace that had most of tho field in trouble, and only Mataroa was able to run on to beat Great Quex. Bumble also finished on, without looking dangerous. Dancing Flame was a poor fourth, well clear of the others. Good Staying Filly

Tho Woodville Handicap was won very easily by Lady Furst. After a couple of furlongs she was clear in the lead. Dungarvan, who had gone wido on the turn out of the straight, joined Lady Furst down the back and they drow away. The rest, headed by Silver River, were bunched, except for I3ig Dook, Hunting Cat and Good Sun. Dungarvan went out by himself round the home turn, but tho filly soon ran up to him and she had the race won a good distance off the post. Dungarvan just struggled on to nose Siegmund out of second money, with Big Dook fourth. Then came Play On, Good Sun, Tiger Gain and Galteemore. Lady Furst put up a high-class performance. Dungarvan was freely used early and he was not disgraced. Siegmund finished very well. Big Dook received a bad run and his performance was encouraging.

Led All the Way

Vascones led all the way to win the Sapling Stakes. She got a break at the start that served her well. It was left to Counter to put in the best claim and he got up to beat Gayest Son for second, with Flying Flag fourth, followed by Chevychase and Newbury Queen. The winner has been racing from early in the season. This is his first success, and it was not achieved without a distinct element of luck. The likeliest improver is Gayest Son. Rowana scored handily in the President's Handicap. White Gold, pulling hard, made the pace with liaile Selassie and went out clear at the halfmile, where Earl Colossus and Rowana were handy. There was a keen struggle until the final strides, when Rowana drew ahead and White Gold weakened into third place. Classical was fourth and Haile Selassie next. Race Between Two The issue in the Ruahine Handicap was confined to Mittie and Florence Mills, and in the straight Mittie asserted her superiority. Luculius Lad finished on for a good third and Brunhild was a poor fourth, after being handy to the leading pair early. A hot favourite, Old Bill, was lucky to win the four-horse Kumeroa Handicap. He had tailed the others to the straight, the pace being made by Mother-in-Law, and when he swept up on terms, he came over, resulting in Sudan being squeezed back as she was coming through on the rail. This occurred about a furlong off the post, yet Sudan pulled back, got out and flew at the finish to gain a close second, going much the better. There is 110 doubt she should have won. Patches ran a good race for his third. A Solid Performance Red Cat scored handily in the County Handicap. She was always going well behind Jeanne and Jncynth and had the race won a long way off the post Jacvnth hung on for second, Tlirasos coming from five or six places back for third. Then followed Imogen, Jeanne, Joe Louis and Huntino. The winner is a solid little filly.
