HISTORY OF CAMBRIDGE
CENTENNIAL PROPOSAL $ & J>Rolt OUR. OWN CORRESPONDENT! CAMBRIDGE. Friday A suggestion to publish a book covering well over a century of Cambridge history, and to provide a copy ' free to every school child in the town and district as a fitting way to mark the centennial, was favourably received by the Cambridge Borough Council. # Mr. C. W. Vennell, who waited on -the council to explain the proposal, said that he had been engaged on research work for the past six months and had amassed a great amount of interesting and hitherto unpublished "information. H* had had the ready co-operation of various Government .-.departments, libraries and private individuals in various parts of the North Island in gathering this material and also of the National Historical ' Committee. f Although some research yet remained to be done, a commencement had been made with the writing of the book, which it was hoped to complete within six months. The Mayor Mr. Edgar James, said that the suggestion seemed a very good way of celebrating the centennial. He considered that there was not enough information known of the early days by the young people of to-day. The question of a Government subsidy was raised,' and the matter was left in the hands of the Mayor for final action.
It was mentioned that other district r ;local bodies had expressed interest in the proposal and seemed ready to cooperate financially in providing copies of the book for the country schools in the district.
