THE HOTEL BOYCOTT
Sir, The oft-repeated question, "What aro wo coming to? " can bo asked about the news of the refusal of some hotel employees to serve Mr. Goldberg because lie worked in the interests of the National Party during last year's election campaign. Where is this sort of thing to end? Thousands of people worked - openly for the National Party at that time. Are they subject, when they travel, to the same intolerable tyranny? The whole incident is portentous. Who rules this country? Men in the position of Mr. Walsh and Mr. Young, or men in Parliament assembled, the representatives of the people? What other unions will act in a similar way ? Much as the barbarous treatment of a visitor is to be regretted by all decent people, that is not the worst feature of this abominable business. The worst feature is the danger of ruining this country by such shortsighted, narrow-minded, spiteful tactics. It is to be hoped that the implications of this dastardly breach of hospitality, this underlying hatred and intolerance, this portent of worse things to follow, will force themselves on all patriotic New Zealanders, fill them with alarm and make them determined that this state of things must end. The patience and forbearance of New Zealanders are not without limit. H.C.W.
