SLOW WORK ALLEGED
COMPLAINT AT THAMES MEN ON DRAINAGE SCHEME [by telegraph —-own correspondent] THAMES. Friday Complaints of slow work were made at a meeting of the Thames County Council following a report of the works supervisor, Mr. G. Sadler, recommending the appointment of six extra men in order to hasten the completion of drainage work at Puriri. He stated that the men would be needed if a drain to the railway line was to be finished by March. In answer to a question he said the cost worked out at over £I4OO a mile. Mr. J. A. Mcßeth said the cost was far too high. Some men were only doing a very small portion of the work they should do each day. . A Member: It is not fair to the county or to the Government. "If councillors were called upon to pay out of tlieir own pockets for the work at the present slow rate of progress, the men would have been put off long ago." said Mr. D. Courtney. It did not matter whether the Government or the county were paving for the work, it should be seen 'to that the men did a fair thing.
