CENTENNIAL MEMORIAL
Sir, —Mr. C. A. French discusses important factors in connection with the proposed Waitakere Park. The first thing is, of course, the acquisition- of title to the land. That achieved, those in authority must decide what use is to ho made of the area, and it is fairly certain that the public will .501 what it demands. We are entitled to believe that tho Domain Board will posse Mi- a wise courage. If tho present magnificent scenic drive were continued along tho existing road to Bethell's, thence follow tho west coast (as nearly ftii may br) to Whatipu, thence follow the road along the northern shores of the Manukau Harbour, via Huia and Titirangi, and so back to the city, Auckland would have at its gates one of the most delightful drives in the world. Within the park itself adequate picnic grounds, safe fireplaces, drives and walks must be provided. The majority of the roads should bo securely blocked from motor traffic. The cream of. humanity, such as lovers, botanists, ornithologists and scientists generally might then wander through sylvan glades of enchantment freed from the necessity of diverting their attention from the business in hand to avoidance of sudden . death rushing round the corner. Rest-houses must bo provided, and the health-giving exercise of walking encouraged in both sexes. Mr. French may rest assured that tho immense traffic offering will provide cheap transport to the hills—that is if competition is not prohibited. E. Eaexe yxius.
