KITCHEN AND PANTRY Next time you clean your fountain pen add a little vinegar to the water. The vinegar will make all the difference and cause the ink to flow much more smoothly afterward. To clean a pastry-board quickly just sprinkle a handful of coarse kitchen salt over the board and rub it in with a damp cloth. All the flour and sticky bits of dough will come off easily, leaving the board clean and white. If when you have washed chamois gloves you find they have dried quite hard (as so oiiten happens), just boil a kettle and hold the gloves in the steam. Pull them gently on to your hands as you do so. They will be as soft as when new and will look as if they had been perfectly ironed. In hot weather, if you pour freshlydelivered milk into a large jug which has been heated with boiling water, it will keep sweet for many hours. Cellophane paper makes excellent jam-pot covers, so do not throw away any pieces that you may have. Just wet the paper, then place it over the top of the.jam jar and slip a rubber band over to keep it in place. The cellophane will dry taut and makes a dustproof and damp-proof cover for the jam jars. In summer, when using jelly, dissolve it in three tablespoonfuls of boiling water and make it up to the pint witli cold water. This mixture will set quickly even in the warmest weather.
