AUCKLAND TOURNEY intermediate champions MISS BEVERLEY'S SUCCESSES FINALS OF SENIORS TO-DAY The Auckland Lawn Tennis Association's annual provincial championship tournament was continued yesterday at the Stanley Street courts in fino weather. Rain on Monday caused a postponement of all the finals, which had been set down for decision. The result was that intermediate and junior events were arranged for yesterday afternoon, while the finals of the senior I championships will be played this alternoon.
Miss Margaret Beverley, of Matamata, retained her three intermediate titles by winning the girls' singles the girls' doubles and combined doubles. The semi-final of the junior boys' singles event was won by A. S. Burns, New Zealand junior champion and a member of the team which will represent the Dominion at the New South Wales ail-ago championships next month. The -final of the intermediate girls' singles between Misses M. Beverley and P. Cooke produced steady tennis. There was very little between them on the general rum of play. Both wero very tired in the third sot, which decided the issue. ; Accurate Smashing • The games in the first set were level I at 3-all, and then Miss Cooke lost her service. She excellent tennis in the second set, when she went to the net very successfully after driving to her opponent's backhand. Miss Cooke's overhead work and smashing for winners were very accurate in this set. With both players too tired to follow into the net to take advantage of opportunities in. the deciding set, it became a question of playing for safety, and one waited for the other to make mistakes. Miss Cooke had a great opportunity of winning when she led 5—4, but she was unable to stand the strain. Game after game was productive of long rallies and both players made simple errors off easy returns. Miss Beverley was the more accurate, and this made the difference between her winning and losing. Effective Combination
The combination of A. S. Burns and B. Broun was too effective for L. Porter and A. Rogers in the final of the intermediate boys' doubles. Misses Smith and Symes won the first set comfortably against Misses Potter and Wallace in the semi-final of the intermediate girls' doubles, but they were well extended in the second set. They lost the final to the title-holders, Misses M. Beverley and P. Cooke. Burns played very well in the semifinal of the intermediate combined doubles and again in the final. Miss Potter netted a number of returns in the semi-final, playing many forehands to Miss Cooke, who was very accurate at the net. Broun and Miss Cooke would have obtained better results in the final had they lobbed more. Pountney was severe and accurate overhead, while Miss Beverley played her usual safe game.
