LAWN TENNIS
AUCKLAND TITLES POSTPONEMENT OF MATCHES RESUMPTION NEXT FRIDAY SENIOR FINALS ON SATURDAY Owing to the heavy rain yesterday there was no play in the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association's annual provincial championship tournament at the Svanley Street courts. The mannffpment committee has decided to conclude the programme on Kridav and Saturday next. The intermediate and junior events will he played on Friday afternoon and the senior championships will he finalised on Saturday afternoon, a start being made on both days at 1 p.m.
This rearrangement will suit some of the intermediates who are nlso taking part in the senior championships. For instance, had play continued yesterday, Miss Margaret Beverley would have had to play six matches —four in the intermediate section and two in the senior. Now she will play the four intermediate matches on Friday and the other two on the following day. Under the circumstances, she should have better prospects of retaining her titles—the three intermediate and the senior singles. The standard displayed so far in the intermediate and junior sections- indicates that the finals will be very keenly contested and the various matches appear certain to attract special attention. The four senior finals to be decided on Saturday afternoon are:—-Men's singles, N. F. Bedford v. X. G. Stnrt; ladies' singles, Miss M. Beverley v. Miss E. Plummer; men's doubles, N. F. Bedford and J. \V. Gunn v. I?. W. Smith and M. T. Wilson: ladies' doubles. Misses R. L. Bishop and P. Cook© v. Misses X. and M. Beverley.
