ATTEMPT ON RECORD MILE GRASS TRACK, TEST LAWN DERBY UNSUCCESSFUL The Australian champion free-logged pnccr Lawn Derby failed in his attempt to errata a" fresh grass mile record at Epsom yesterday. Although the track" was in good order, atmospheric, conditions were not at all suitable for record-breaking and a strong breeze was against success. Little time was wasted in warming up and Lawn Derby, driven by W. J. O'Shea, set off at a fast pace to bo joined after little more than a furlong by Mohican (F. Holmes), who acted as a galloping pace-maker. The first half-mile was run in 1.2 3-/5, and there was no improvement on the second half of the journey, which was covered in the same time, to make 2.5 1-3 for the mile. Although unsuccessful, Lawn Derby was given a fine ovation. The Epsom track record. '2.-1. is held by Nervie's Last, also an unboppled pacer. Lawn Derby's grass track record is 2..'}. CHALLENGE MATCH LAWN DERBY AND VAN DERBY TO-MORROW'S TROTTING EVENT As the result of the line performances of Van Derby, his trainqr, F. J. Smith,' on behalf of the owner, Mr. E. Tatlow, who has returned to Tasmania, yesterday issued a challenge to Mr. J. F. MacKennoy, owner of Lawn Derby, to race the latter over a mile. Mr. MacKenney accepted and the Auckland Trotting Club committee decided to offer a purse of £31)0 for the contest. The special event will take place to-morrow after the fourth race, the President's Handicap, which will be run about 2.15 p.m. Van Derby was bred in Tasmania, where be took a mile show record of 2.8, and sinco coming to Smith's stable has started seven times for four wins and a second. He is a brilliant horse and put up a sterling performance yesterday to win the Summer Handicap in 2.40 2-5, and run the last half-mile in lm. Lawn Derby has mile records of 1.59 2-5 at Addington, and 2.3 at New Brighton, as well as several in Australia. His 2.5 1-5 at Epsom corresponded with the time registered by Van Derby over tho last mile of tlio October Handicap, in which he ran second to Baron Alfonso. Lawn Derby is by Robert Derby from Roselaun, and Van Derby is by Glohc Derby, sire of Robert Derby, from Roselaun. Tho last match raco at Alexandra Park was between the two-vear-old trotters, Koro Peter (J. Shaw) arid First Wrack (D. Warren), and was run on .June 27, 1928, Koro Peter winning on a heavy track and running the mile and a-half in 3.34 2-5. It was a challenge match and the purse was £175.
