UNWATERING MINE

iSLOW PROGRESS MADE WORKINGS AT HIKURANGI INSTALLING ANOTHER PUMP [BY TELEGRAPH—OWN COKRESPONnENT] WHANGAREI, Tuesday In the efforts to unwater the flooded Hikurangi coal mine, another large pump is to be installed. The mine was flooded over a month ago when a sudden inrush of water drove the miners out of the workings, and tho pumps which were then in the mine were unable to cope with the situation. A pump capable of handling 60,000 gallons of water an hour was later installed and, as the electric power from the mine's own plant could not deliver sufficient energy to drive all the pumps and other equipment, a lead was taken from the North Auckland Power Board's main. Work has now commenced on the installation of a further pump with a capacity of 110,000 gallons an hour. This pump was salvaged Bome time ago by a diver from another flooded mine shaft in the area. The level of the water in the workings is not receding to the extent that was anticipated. It is hoped that with the addition of the extra large pump the work of unwatering the mine should be greatly expedited.
