WARFARE HALTED
STALEMATE IN SPAIN COMBATANTS' HANDICAPS FRONT LINE OF 900 MILES DECISIVE ACTION CHECKED By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright LISBON, Dec. 19 Information received at Lisbon from official military observers suggests that the Spanish war is at a standstill. There has been no real offensive for many months. It is stated that as situated at present neither army is capable of launching a decisive action. The front lino extends for at least 900 miles, whicli is twice the length of tho Western Front in the Great War. It is believed that Goneral Franco's army is not big enough to permit of him marshalling the troops necessary for an offensive without dangerously weakening his hold on existing positions. Tho equipment and defences of the Republican forces are now stated to be better than thoso of General Franco, but shortage of food remains the big weakness, hence the importance to General Franco of securing belligerent rights, which would enable him to apply a blockade.
