FIFTY YEARS AGO

EXAMINATION PAPERS Considerable dissatisfaction was felt in New Zealand half a century ago over the unsuitable papers set for matriculation and scholarship examinations. The following' is an extract from a leading article which appeared in the New Zealand Herald of December 21, 1888: • "We believe we are expressing a very widespread feeling of dissatisfaction in speaking harshly of the character of some of the examination papers set to test the knowledge of students in this colony. They are a series of puzzles which, although they may exemplify the curiosities of the knowledge possessed by the examiners, are no test whatever of the general knowledge of the students. One examiner after another has been tried and abandoned, each showing the same irrepressible tendency to exhibit his own particular fad. We have seen paper sfter paper set in the recent matriculation examinations that has been utterly valueless. Disappointment has been felt by candidates and remonstrance made by teachers, but so far all to no avail. Something will have to be done to correct matters Some of the papers are an outrage on common sense."
