SOLDIERS ENTERTAIN

PARTY FOR CHILDREN FUNCTION AT NARROW NECK The children and friends of the married members of the First Field Brigade of the Royal New Zealand Artillery were the guests of the single officers and men at an enjoyable Christmas party at headquarters, Narrow Neck, yesterday afternoon. The rooms and corridors were gay with bunting and coloured streamers, while in a corner of the recreation room was a large Christmas tree, lavishly decorated with silver stars and balloons and bearing an individual present for each child. One of the windows had been cleverly disguised as a chimney and fireplace and it was at this point, after a sledge tour of the grounds, that Santa Claus made an effective entrance and later distributed the gifts from the tree. Before the youthful guests sat down to their tea they were entertained with community singing by Miss Dorothy Wood and Mr. E. Silver. Members of the committee comprised:—Lieutenant H. E. Gilbert, Lance-Bombardier J. S. Best, Gunner S. H. Bryant and Gunner R. Spence. Among those present were: —The officer commanding the Northern Military District, Colonel 0. H. Mead. Lieutenant-Colonel N. McD. Weir, who was accompanied by Mrs. Weir; Major F. N. Nurse and Mrs. Nurse, Captain C. E. Weir and Captain R. C. Queree.
