STAR PRONTO IN FORM FOREST JEWEL PACES WELL STARGUM GOES UNHOPPLED BY ABAYDOS Although dead, the dirt track at Epsom was in good order yesterday when horses with engagements at the Auckland Trotting Club's Summer: Meeting were given sound tasks. The best half-miles wore recorded by Star, Pronto, 1.7; Stargum, 1.7 3-5; Forest Jewel, Kewpie's Triumph and Fisher,; 1.8; Equipoise and Kewpic's Crest, 1.8 3-5; Argolis and Sequoia, 1.9. Star Pronto (B. Dyer), after working a mile and a-half evenly at a 2.34 rate, covered two miles in 4.40. The last mile was left behind in 2.17 iind half-mile in 1.7. Star Pronto looks to have benefited by his racing at Hamilton. . ' . c v. Forest Jewel (L. Mitchell) went two miles in 4.42, being joined after covering the. first half-milo in 1.12 by Sweet Aloes (S. M. August) and Kewpic's Crest,(J. Gee), who carried her.to the mile ajid a-half in 3.34, where Kewpie's Crest retired. Forest JinveLeanio home well aiid is in great heart. Sweet Aloes showed improvement in going 3.32 for the mile and a-half. Kewpie's Crest was given a second task, going a mile and a-half with Kewpie's Triumph (K. Bell)., ' who finished in front in 3.37. They were on terms at the mile in 2.29,.but Kewpie's Triumph finished the better over the last half-mile in 1.8. Kewpie's Crest took 3.37. 3-5. v : . Sequoia (W. H. Sammons), accompanied Kewpie's Bingen (H. jlcNaughton) in the middle half of a mile and a-half, but • retired as the latter passed the mile in 2.28. August) went away several lengths ahead of Silk Lady (W. 11. Andrews), and, giving a solid display of trotting, led her over a 'mild and a-quarter' in 3.5 2-5. Cyrano is by Wrack—Nantwich, and a lullbrother to Bittersweet and Gerfalcon. Last season ho raced usefully as a pacer. Silk Lady, who has been on the easy list, was not. hustled, taking 1.12 for the last half-mile. Gold Kip (C. Ml Morrison) trotted the last half-milo of seven furlongs in 1.10. In a second run, he covered a mile and a-half in 3.40, being slow over the last half-mile iri 1;15,' after breaking at-the turn. *v. i; Argolis (S. M. August), after covering the first two furlongs in 365, got to the end of a mile and a-quarter in 2.51, and was doing his -best to record 34 l-5s for the last two furlongs. Smith), but they were together at the end or a mile and a-half in 3.38, Vanora going the first mile in 2.28 and the last halfmile in 1.10. Bedford has derived benefit from recent racing, and Vanora .is showing signs of regaining form. Nelson Pearl (S. M. August)', after trailing Clay .Pot (J. Paton) for seven furlongs, was on terms with him at the end of a mile and a-quarter in 3.16. Great Surprise (L. Laver) went smoothly over a mile and a-half and appears to have benefited by his racing at Claudelands. Frank Redmond (A. Paton) was npt bustled to trot a mile and a-half in 3.57, the last half-mile, in 1.17, being the fastest. Frank Redmond, is making gradual progress and developing solidness.

Pukemiro showed that he retains speed. Fisher (A. Paton) led Stargum (W. Head) in the early stages of a mile and a-half, but they were together at the end in 3.35. Both were unhoppled and gave pleasing displays. v Equipoise (R. August) was in front of Top Hand (S. M. August) at the end of a mile and a-half in 3,33, the first mile taking 2.24. It was very easy 'work for Equipoise, who is in great heart. Top Hand-was going well until lie tangled a.furlong from home, but he completed, his task in 3.34. Gipsy Light (A. Cole) worked two miles at a 2.30 fate, sprinting the last half-mile in lvlO. She has done very little work on the tracks for some time, and has built up a" good deal.
