RAILWAY TRAVELLERS LAST CHANCE AT OLD FARES HIGHER RATE NOW IN FORCE Thousands of people intending to travel during the Christmas period and early in the new year bought their railway tickets last week to avoid the 10 per cent increase in fares which became operative after midnight on Saturday. "I think everybfljjly in Auckland must have bought a ticket; it has been the biggest rush I can remember," said an official in the central booking office on Saturday. "We have had queues of people waiting at the counters, and this week some of us have been too busy to worry about lunch. With Christmas travel we are always busy at this time of the year, but with the change in the fares in addition it has been a great rush." Officials at the railway station have also had a busy time selling tickets to intending travellers. No matter how short the journey, tickets have been bought in advance to effect a saving. A number of workers' tickets have been bought ahead of the time they will ho required.
