MOTOR SPIRITS TAX
DIVERSION TO HIGHWAYS [by telegraph —OWN correspondent] CITRISTCHURCH, Saturday The Canterbury Progress League has not dropped its proposal to have the 4£d a gallon tax on motor spirits diverted to tho Highways Account. It was reported by the highways committee at a meeting of tho league that further correspondence had passed between the secretary, Mr. P. Climie, and tho Minister of Finance, the Hon. W. Nash. . ~ Tho highways committee felt that indthlhg moro 'could be done at the moment in regard to tlie matter, and jit-recommended that further action be [withheld until a more favourable opportunity presented itself. More money was needed to enable tho Main Highways Board to push ahead with the sealing of the roads, and the most sensible way of providing the money was by devoting tlie whole of the proceeds from the petrol, tax to that purpose, The report was adopted*
