PROMISING JUVENILES SUCCESSES AT ROSEHILL JOURNAL RETURNS TO FORM [from our own correspondent] SYDNEY, Dec. 2 Although the race was confined .to two-year-olds who had not finished in a place, the divisions of the Harris Park Stakes at ltosehill last Saturday provided two smart horses in Chisvvick and Overbold. They won in excellent style and Chiswick in particular impressed favourably. Ho is a well-grown colt by the great mile performer of a few seasons ago, Chatham, who promises to develop into an excellent sire of two-year-olds. Chiswick did not get away well, but he finished solidly and defeated the Jamieson stable's filly Folk Song, who had every chance, but met a colt too good at the weights. Overbold, who won the other division, is a Brazen colt. Ho showed pace and determination and would have scored more easily but for hanging in the straight. He is trained by L. Haigh, who has not had a first-class galloper since he retired Rogilla. Journal extended his eight-year-old record by winning the November Handicap at ltosehill. Journal has had a mixed career, for, although a Caulfield Cup winner, ho has had a number of setbacks, due to, unsoundness. The same ago as Catalogue, he was believed to bo on the down-grade, but, fighting his way through on the inside, he just won from Unafraid and Improvement. It is probable that Improvement would had won if Unafraid had not come away from the rails and interfered with him. This not only hampered Improvement, but enabled Journal to come through. Improvement has had two runs lately and has raced well enough to say that he will take a good deal of beating next time. Six Hundred, by Light Brigado, pleased her supporters at ltosehill. Carrying the Sarchcrie colours and having only her second race, she scored impressively in a seven-furlong maiden event. She is a five-year-old and has not been much raced. J. T. Jamieson received three horses from New Zealand this week in Late Night, who has been on holiday, and a couple of two-year-olds by Lord Warden. All three travelled satisfactorily. '

Her owners applied for the name Erba, but it was disallowed. They omitted to send in a further application, with the result that Wotan's young sister is still without a name. Under tho Rules of Racing, a horsp must be named before it can race.

TURF JOTTINGS TRACK AND STABLE GOSSIP Philemup should be deleted from the list for the To Awamutu Cup and Mio FratollO, 7.7, added to the Ohaupo Handicap. Auckland Cup entrants who were also entered for the Manawatu Cup on Boxing Day include Wild Chase, Argentic, Quadroon, Kena, The Bigot, Happy Landing, Tidowaitcr, Galteemoro anil Conveyer. Whetmna, who sprang a big surprise at Otaki on Saturday, Bcored hia first success on tho same track four years ago. His only other win was at Manawatu in 1935, but ho once separated the three-year-olds Cerne Abbas and Essex at Trentham. The successful jockey F. Sheau denied early in the week reports that he intended to retiro from race-riding. Ho said that in the ordinary course ho would retire in a few years, but lie had no immediate intention of doing so. Two previous winners of tho day, Sporting Gift and Pursuit, ran in the Uokereko Handicap at Otaki on Saturday without being placed. The favourite, Sporting Gift, with a 41b. rehandicap, was badly loft, and it was ascertained that his rider, S. Anderson, was badly kicked at tho post by White Lady, Pursuit, who had a 31b. rehandicap, was also badly away.

Judging by the manner in which ho lias been working during tho past week, Birthday Boy has derived considerable benefit from his recent racing and it will bo surprising if ho does not make a prominent showing in the To Awamutu Cup at Te Rapa.

Herr Otto von Mitzlaff, owner, breeder and trainer of racehorses, and once a successful gentleman rider m Germany, died recently. Although, ne had no gallopers of outstanding class under his care, he. was at tho head ot German trainers in 1936, 1937 again this year.
