ELEPHANTS ROUTED

COUNCILLOR'S FEAT USED SLIPPER AND CABBAGE j>BOM OUtt OWN CORRESPONDENT] LONDON, Nov. 14 Armed with only a carpet slipper, a Rothwcll town councillor, Mr. J. 0. Dempsey, drove two circus elephants from his cabbage patch. The elephants escaped from a circus which was about to leave tho town, roamed across a field, and entered Mr. Dempsey's property. "The first I knew about it was when a man ran into my factory and told mo two largo elephants were busy eating my cabbages," Mr. Dempsey said. "I ran out and, with a slipper in one hand and a cabbago I pulled out in the other, managed to hold up the elephants, who were having a fine time. They were pulling up cabbages with their trunks, eating them, and spitting out the stalks 'and roots. "By the time I got there there were plenty of spectators, but no helpers. I waved my slipper and cabbago, and after a few tenso moments tho truants ambled off back to tho circus. The fun was well worth tho cabbages I lost," he added with a smile.
