ELOCUTION TESTS

SHAKESPEARE SOCIETY THE AUCKLAND BRANCH PRESENTATION OF AWARDS Elocution competitions arranged by the Auckland branch of the British Empire Shakespeare Society were held on Saturday night in the presence of many parents and friends. Speeches and scenes from the plays were performed bv the young members, who wore attired in handsome and colourfid costumes in keeping with the characters they represented. Following the performance, the judge, s>fr. J. H. Harvey, addressed the candidates, and in the course of helpful and critical remarks expressed his pleasure at the good articulation of all candidates and the general high standard maintained. During the evening songs wore contributed by Esme Leach.

The president of the Auckland branch, Mr. Henry W. Wilson, presented prizes and certificates to the following competitors:—Under 10 years: prize, Cicely Fenton; certificates of merit,' Barbara Scott and Warren Dibble. Under 12 years: prize, Colleen Keesing; certificates of merit, Marilyn Gardiner and Pamela Waddell. Under 15 years: prize, Shirley Hancock; certificates of merit, Barbara Bell, Enid Evans, June Hunt and Glen Nicholson. Under 19 years: prize, Mavis Hancock; certificates of merit, Ngaire Dennis and Bona Petty. Over 19 years: prize, Edna Lewis; certificates of merit, Valerie Blackmore and June Gifford.
