GARDEN PARTY

CANDIDATE HONOURED TRIBUTE TO MR. MERRITT NATIONAL PARTY FUNCTION The picturesque garden of Mrs. Alfred Kidd in Gillies Avenue, Epsom, was the scene of a garden party held on Saturday afternoon by members of the women's branch of the Epsom, Parnell and Park Jioad committees of the National Party in the Auckland East electorate in honour of Mr. and Mrs. H. T. Merritt. There was a large attendance, and the garden with its lovely old trees, its terraced lawns bordered with beds of cinerarias, standard roses and stock, and its flower-canopied walks was a perfect setting for the function. The guests we/c received by Mrs. Kidd, chairman of the Epsom women's branch of the electorate, assisted by members of the committee. Mrs. Kidd was wearing a patterned frock in green and autumn tonings and a black straw hat, bound with cire ribbon. Mrs. Merritt wore a navy blue wool georgette ensemble with an ermine necklet, and . a navy straw liat. Welcome to the Guests In welcoming the guests of honour, Mr. H. S. W. King, chairman of the Auckland East electorate branch, stressed the importance of such gatherings in keeping together the organisation and maintaining interest in the objects of the party. Tributes to the work of Mr. and Mrs. Merritt were also paid by Dr. Hilda Northcroft, president of the women's division of the National Party, and by Mr. W. R. Fee, chairman of the Epsom branch of the Auckland East electorate. Mr. Merritt expressed his gratitude to all those who had helped in organising his campaign and for the friendship which they had shown to him. Although defeated on this occasion, he said, he was not dismayed and would be found ready to take up the fight on another occasion if required. Members of Committee Adding to the enjoyment of the function were musical items given by Miss Eileen O'Carroll (harpist). Miss Jean Clarkson ('cello), Mr. Robert Emmet O'Carrol (violin). MILFQRD BRANCH MEMBERS ELECTION HELPERS AS GUESTS An enjoyable evening was spent at the Kitchener Park Tennis Pavilion recently, when the committee of the Milford branch of the National Party held a dance and progressive bridge and rnah jongg evening to entertain those who had assisted in the recent election campaign. During the evening, the chairman, Mr. J. D. Vernon, thanked all who had worked so well, and made presentations to Mr. and Mrs. P. F. Gee and Miss C. Gee in recognition of the great assistance given by them. Another speaker was Mr. J. E. Close. . The prize-winners were as follows: Bridge, Mrs. J. Phillips and Miss G. Williams; mail jongg, Mrs. Jury and Mr. R. N. K. Swanston.
