FINAL TRAINING

SOME SMART SPRINTS AUSSIE RA AND MAJORITY CONDITION OF PHILCOURT HIGH CASTE FINISHES WELL The No. 3 grass track was open for galloping at Ellerslie yesterday morning, when several of the visiting candidates were seen out in, useful tasks. The going was faster tban it has been for some time. . / Tlio Gisborne novice Blonde Princess sprinted threo furlongs in 37 3-ss. Although she infused plenty of da6h into her work, Blonde Princess has not done too well 011 tho trip and is not a .certain, starter to-day. Mintlaw (Green) iinished in front of Royal Abb (Wiggins) at tho end of five furlongs in 1.4 2-5, tho first two taking 25 4-ss. Neither was unduly bustled. Mintlaw, who recently joined It. S. Bagby's stable and had his first start at To Rapa, is a likely sort. After conceding Royal Message (Markwick) a couple of lengths start, High Caste (Wiggins) finished iu front at the conclusion of threo furlongs in 37s- Considering he covered a good deal of extra ground on tho turn, it was a nice effort on tlio part of High Caste, who finished strongly. Aussie Ra (Vaughan) and Majority (McKenzie) were associated over six furlongs in 1.18 2-5, tho lirst three being run in 395. They wont very evenly throughout, Majority impressing most.

Lexden (McKenzio) was under a cood hold while running tlireo furlongs in 43 2-ss. Ho is a speedy-looking novice by the Limond horse Resinous aiid is in the same stable as Majority. Tlio two-year-old;- Foxtoon (Evans) got to the end of three furlongs comfortably in 38 l-ss. He was running a little green in th& straight. His stable mate Foxmond (Evans) was allotted g, similar task and was travelling very easily to record 42 4-ss. Foxmond will probably start on the second day. , Rozel (Fergus) was schooled over four hurdles, giving a good display. Rozel, who has not raced for somo time, is engaged on Monday. Several of the visiting horses, including Golden Sheila, Pirato King, Greek Queen, Farland, En Tour, Black Musk, Brazen Bold and Royal Dance, performed useful wqrk on the tan. . The Alison Cup topweight, King Roy, is not among R. H. Martin's team at Ellerslie, but there is a possibility that he may be brought up for the second day. -

Although it was reported during the week that Philcourt may not fulfil his Alison Cup engagement to-day, his trainer, W. J. McLean, stated yesterday that, he is a certain starter. Although Philcourt was beaten in his his gallop over- a mile on Thursday, McLean is satisfied with, his condition.

TAKANINI ACTIVITIES

HOT BOX PERFORMS SOLIDLY

SOUND SIX WITH VALAMITO

Some candidates for Ellerslie who were not galloped on Thursday morning were given their final trials yesterday on the plough, which at this time of the year is considered to bo as fast as the grass. Hot Box (Smith) and Valamito (Coilett), Alison Cup candidates, jumped off at the N six-furlong post, and, after running the first tlireo in 36 3-ss, got to the end of their task in 1.15. Both finished well aud thero was little between them at the end. However, Hot Box appeared to be going a shade the better.

With the assistance of Bronwen over the first three, Penzance (Hatwell) was timed to run five furlongs iu 1.1 4-5. She is to fulfil her engagement in the Milford Handicap, in which she appears to have good prospects. Maxam (T. Green) was sent seven fin-longs, which she completed in 1.33, the first five taking 1.5. Maxam, who has been shin sore, would appreciate easier track conditions, but is expected to be a strong contender for honours in the Takapuna Plate. HAWKE'S BAY HORSES ELEVEN' FOR FEILDING [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] - HASTINGS, Friday Hawke's Bay stables will be represented at Feilding by Charade, Tareha, Laggard, Tiger .. Gain, Trench Law, Madonna, Royal Spados, Big Dook, Royal Minstrel, Fossicker and Littlo Dorrit. Charade won' tho Century Hurdles last May but has yet to make her appearance this season. She likes tho going firm but her weight and lack of recent racing may be obstacles to early success. On spring form at Wellington and Napier, Tareha must be respected in the Waituna Hurdles, as ho is at the peak of his form. Little Dorrit, the only maiden candidate, ran second in hor last attempt. The turning track at Feilding should suit her well. Tiger Gain will attempt to win his third Manchester Handicap. The old gelding appears to be as good as ever but no rider has been definitely engaged to ride him. Trench Law created a very favourable impression by coming from the back to run second at Napier Park. The extra furlong to-day should suit the Gascony colt. Trench Law looks as good as any of the Hawke's Bay contingent to win on the trip. Before going away Royal Spades ran five furlongs on the Hastings plough in 1.3, to finish with Fossicker, but he has only one small maiden ovent to hie credit.

Big Pook will make his first appearance of the season in the Kiwitea Handicap but he has been in solid work for some time and he races well fresh. Engaged in the same race is Jtoyal Minstrel, who has taken time to come to form, but he should show up at Feikling. Fossicker, the third entrant from here, has been galloping well, but he is a long-striding gelding.

DEATH OF TRAINER MR. W. H. MOBBERLEY PASSES Tho death occurred yesterday morning at his residence,* Morrin Street, Ellerslie, of Mr. W. H. Mobberloy, who some years ago was a well-known trainer at Kllerslio. Among tho horses ho had in his care were Loch Fyne, Nervine, Blue Garment. Phosphorus and Aristos. Mr. Mobberloy, who had been an invalid for many years, is survived by his wife and daughter. DOUBTFUL STARTERS [by telegraph—OWN* correspondent] HAWERA, Friday Student Prince is not likely to bo a starter to-morrow, but he will go down for the second day of the Feilding, meeting. Ramleh and Carmody are also doubtful starters to-morrow, although both are' to continue their second-day engagements,-
