DESTROYER MAURY RETURN TO SAN FRANCISCO MESSAGE FROM CAPTAIN HOSPITALITY APPRECIATED The United States destroyer Maury left Auckland yesterday morning at nine o'clock to make her return voyago to her home base at San Francisco. She had been nine days in port. On the way she will call at Pago Pago to embark several ratings, who wero left there on tho voyage south because of sickness, and later tho Maury will spend a week at Honolulu. The destroyer is expected to arrive at San Francisco on December 3.
Before they left officers and men reaffirmed their thanks to Auckland for hospitality during tho destroyer's visit. Those who had been able to make a tour inland as tho guests of the Now Zealand Government were also generous in their praises of the Dominion's beauties and they seemed keen to revisit the country. Appreciation of tho efforts of tho people of Auckland to entertain tho personnel of tho Maury was contained in a radio message which the captain, Lieutenant-Commander E. M. Thompson, sent to the Mayor, • Sir Ernest Davis, as tho vessel cleared the port.
" On behalf of tho officers and crew of tho Maury, permit me to express to you and to tho people of Auckland our most cincere appreciation of your kindness and hospitality which has made our visit to your city so extremely delightful," stated tho message. "In leaving Auckland we leave but temporarily, we trust, the many friends whoso courtesies and understanding we will cherish through the years to come."
The following reply was sent by the Mayor by wireless yesterday afternoon: "The citizens of Auckland will appreciate your kind message. Thoy fully enjoyed the stay here of yourself and members, of the ship's company. Bon voyage."
