I Mr. A. H. Allen, who is Mayor of Dunedin, protested against what he described as "an unwarranted interference" with private enterprise, but the proposal was carried by J35 votes to 10. One member of Synod reminded Mr. Allen that the City Corporation conducted a fire department which was considered a valuable asset, and that if he were consistent he would advocate its abolition.
