YOUNG MASTER MARINER.; FOREIGN CERTIFICATE HELD I THREE CAPTAINS IN FAMILY One of the youngest possessors of a foreign-going master mariner's certificate in New Zealand is Mr. J. F. Holm, who recently passed his ex- v animation in Auckland. ICducated at Wellington and ißongotai Colleges, he matriculated in 1929, and immediately answejed the call of the sea, which he has inherited from many generations of sea captains. He began his career in the topsail schooner Huia,,where he served for four years, and. since then he has served in various foreign-going vessels. - "...
After passing for his second mate's certificate in 1934 he joined 'the firm of H. C. Sleigh, Limited, Sydney, and served in the intercolonial steamer Abel Tasman. Toward the 12nd of 1936, when in England, he joined the Watclilin Line motor-ship Port Tauranga as • > chief officer, a position he lias held ever since. . . Mr: Holm's success makes him the - third master mariner of Jfchat name alive in the Dominion, to-day. His uncle is Captain M. T. .Holm, manager of the Auckland waterfront labour bureau, and his father is Captain S.. Holm, of the Holm Shipping Company, Limited. 1 .
