OIL FROM COAL
NEW SECRET PROCESS AUSTRALIAN'S DISCOVERY A new and secret process for the production of petrol from coal, devised by a Sydney chemist after years of research, was investigated by Mr. Hendry Luke, chairman and managingdirector of Wilton Collieries, Limited, who returned by the Wanganella yesterday after a business visit to Australia. Mr. Luke said there was a prospect of the process being introduced into New Zealand. "They have made very successful laboratory tests, and aro now erecting a plant to deal with the coal on a commercial basis," Mr. Luke said. The process was completely new, and exhaustive and satisfactory tests had been mado with the fuel obtained by the new method. Tho dependence of Australia on outside sources for the supply of petrol made the new discovery extremely important, specially as there seemed to be little chance of finding natural .supplies of oil in tho Commonwealth.
Any kind of coal, straight from the mine." could be used in the new process for the production of oil. Mr. Luke said. The method still had to be proved on a, commercial basis, but the tests made so far were most encouraging. '
