FAST TROTTING

EPSOM HIGHLIGHTS VAN DERBY OUTSTANDING SPEED OF AUSTRALIAN PACER FINE FOUR-YEAR-OLDS BY ABAYDOS The Auckland Trotting Club's Spring Meeting was an all-round success and a pleasing feature from the viewpoint of tho management, was a substantial totalisator increase of over £IO,OOO. The racing generally was excellent and fast times, showing great improvement on the handicaps, were recorded. Among a number of high-class performances, none stood out more boldly than those of the Australian horse Van Derby. F. J. Smith's horse, who looked tho part of a champion, was very unlucky the first day to be beaten by Baron Alfonso, a stable cast-off, as, after going away correctly, he had to be pulled up to avoid colliding with a etarter's assistant, who was kicked by Gold Circle and knocked into the. path of Van Derby.

Tho incident unbalanced and unsettled Van Derby, who lost a furlong, but he gave a taste of his quality by pacing the last mile in 2.5, and the half in 1.2, to be second. On Monday he was conceding Gold Circle a long start with a mile to go, but again proved his worth by winning nicely, to run the last milo in 2.9, and tho half in 1.4 1-5, on a slower track. Van Derby was handicapped on 3.34, and his respective times were 3.19 4-5 and 3.20. He will rise quickly to the highest grade. Trio o! Four-year-olds

The four-year-olds, Uenuku, Equipoise and Parauri, were outstanding in their class, and this trio should stage many interesting battles on their way to high grades. Uenuku, with an advantage of 12 yards, defeated Parauri in the Parnell Handicap, going 3.17 2-5 off 3.34, the second horse doing 3.16 4-5 off 3.33. Equipoise made a very bad beginning. Parauri did not Btart in the Junction Handicap, which Equipoise won off the limit m 3.23, Uenuku, on 48 yards, being second, in 8.21 1-5.

Uenuku met with a mishap in the preliminary which unsettled him and he pulled hard to take the lead, but Equipoise had more in reserve and ran home an easy winner. Should these young pacers meet in the Goldfields Cup at Thames, they ought to make a great fight for supremacy, but they may have to contend with Van Derby. Good form in the same class was displayed by Effie Parrish, Bismuth, Bedford, Petite Jewel and Forest Jewel.

While Effie Parrish went 3.20 1-5, she had no chance of conceding start to the four-year-olds. She was turned out in good by B. Flood, who was formerly with R. B. Berry. who registered 3.20 2-5, ran to his best from an awkward mark, but the effort would have given him victory in ordinary circumstances. He recorded 3.22, yet could not do better than third. Petite Jewel made his best showing when he raCed off the end of the 3.34 class, finishing third to Equipoise and Uenuku. Forest Jewel now on 3.31, ran two honest races, but could not concede 36 yards. Nervie's Last (Joes 3.13 4-5 '

Some idea of the task of Nervie's Last from 60yds. behind in the Jellicoe Handicap can be gleaned from the fact that while he ran 3.13 4-5, which time is only four-fifths of a second outside the New Zealand record of Onyx, against time, he could not get closer than fourth, Noble Prince going 3.15 from the limit. Nervie's Last also ran prominently in the sprint races without being placed. Noble Prince scored, his first win for several years and his success was a tribute to the patience of his trainer, J. McKendrick, who drove him a fine race. The Wrack gelding had shown most promising form on the tracks and with the firm ground, ran up to his best.

Navy Blue, one of the foremost performers in the higher grade, is an acquisition to the class. M. Stewart produced her in great heart. She was narrowly beaten in the Jellicoe Handicap after going 3.17 1-5. Improved with the race, she won the Remuera Handicap from end to end. While he did not win, Kenworthy was placed in both starts and with an ounce of luck he may have won on either day. His connections preferred . the sprint events, probably with the view of not disturbing his two-mile mark of 4.31, which places him in line for the Auckland Trotting Cup.
