OAMARU EVENTS

BEST CLASS ENGAGED KING'S PLAY IMPRESSIVE JACKARANDA AND MARLENE [BY TELEGIIAI'H—OWN CORRESPONDENT] OAMAIIU, Tuesday Gerfalcon did not trot steadily in tho Improvers' Handicap at Oamaru yesterday and his form was in striking contrast to that shown at Now Brighton last month. It was not until the last half-mile that he showed any speed, then ho put in a good run on tho top turn but did not finish with any dash. Swift Guy was tho bestdriven horse in tho race and ho scored his fourth successive victory in tho good time of 3.29 from a 3.39 mark. Axiom broke up at the start. Tho Trial Handicap provided a capital contest and, while Sentiment won decisively, it appeared to somo that Pecnnia had beaten Kilrea for second place. Kilrea, who had the worst of the running, made a groat effort in tho straight and was unlucky. Sentiment is a four-year-old gelding by Maxegin from Romantic and is a promising young pacer. Conceded Start and Won

Jackaranda gave a high-grado performance in winning tho Redcastle Handicap, for he gave a good start over the last half-mile and was full of running at tho finish. Ho fairly outstayed Bill B. and the others. Guncase, attended by Bill B. and Aldershot, made practically all the running until a furlong from home. Jackaranda then tackled Bill B. and won decisively. Interest centred in the performance of the New Zealand Derby candidate, Aidershot, who gave a fine display. Cantata proved to be tho best stayer in the President's Handicap and, although she had tho run of the race, it would have taken a good one to beat her. A slow pace was set from the start and tho last mile was run in 2.9. Marsceres, Gallant Knight, Cantata, Aide de Camp and Ginger Jack made most of the running, but half a mile from home, Ginger Jack raced to the front and, at a clipping pace, ho carried on to tho straight, with Cantata and Gallant Knight handy. Cantata had the race in hand at the distance and she won nicely from Morella, who came fast over the last part and is due for a win shortly. Ginger Jack was made too much use of and the best of the remainder was Gallant Knight. Solid Trotters Blue t Logan and Gyrate trotted solidly in the Waitaki Handicap and they had the finish to themselves. The winner is an improving trotter. Marlene gave a great display of pacing in the Dash Handicap, for after she and Fine Art had lost ground at the start, both took a hand in the finish. With half a mile covered, Marlene had gone to the tail of the field, which was headed by Cavan Chief, Icev us, Three Bells and Gold Salute. At the distance Icevus was disposed of by Fine Art, who appeared a likely winner, but he broka 100 j'ards from the post. The | best of the others was Three Bells.

The New Zealand Trotting Cup horses created interest in the Hannon Memorial Handicap and King's Play put up a fine pierformanbe to beat Parisienne, after a strong finish. King's Play made all the running over the last five furlongs and held off Parisienne, who, however, went a great race, which will improve her. Ginger Jack again went solidly and the best of the unplaced division was Worthy Light.

ELLERSLIE HORSES TRIALS ON EASY TRACK SOLID ROUND BY KING MUSK BIRTHDAY BOY AND GLEN ABB The majority of horses galloped at Ellerslie yesterday morning were not after time. The best trials recorded were those by Birthday Boy and Glen Abb over six furlongs and of King Musk over a round. The No. 3 grass track was open for fast work and the going was easy after overnight rain. Paint (Tonks) strode out freely over an easy five furlongs in 1.6 2-5, the first two taking 265. Without being required to do anything strenuous lately, Paint looks in capital order for Whangarei. Silver Quex (Gilchrist) got to the end of six furlongs in 1.20, the first three boing run in 39 2-ss. She was under a good hold and worked attractively. In a similar task, Kelly (Gilchrist) strode leisurely to record 1.20 1-5, the last half-mile taking 525. Kelly has never been better than he is at present. Tip Toes (Dulieu) and Bonny belle (Tremain) finished together over five furlongs in 1.5 2-5, the last four being run in 525. Tip Toes went solidly anu is ready to show her best. There was little between Palmint (Tonks) and Flcetwind (Gilchrist) at the conclusion of five furlongs in 1.5, the last four run in 525. Both were doing their work well at the end. Bright Idea (Buchanan) was given an easy six furlongs in 1.24 3-5, taking 56s for the halfmile. Bright Idea looks improved after his recent racing and he is intended for Whangarei. Sir Abb (Hale) and Surella (Green) finished on terms at the end of half a mile in 49 3-ss, the first furlong being run in 12 l-ss. It was the best gallop of the morning over the distanco and both were doing it well. Master Vaals (Nesbit) ran the last three of four furlongs in company with the Vaals— Ambrosian filly (Cameron) in 41s. The latter is a likely looking sort. Vaalstar (Tremain) Mai de Mer (Tucker) and Summary (Simon) finished together at the conclusion of a round in 1.42 4-5, the last six furlongs being run in 1.22 4-5 and the hafimile in 555. Mai de Mer, who had the worst of the weights, shaped satisfactorily. Glen Abb (Green) and Birthday Boy (.Markwick) finished well clear of Fidelia (Coon) to register 1,16 1-5 for six furlongs, the first three taking 38s. Glen Abb looks more solid than formerly and is expected to bo an improved performer this season. Birtlulny Boy hit out in his attractive stylo and looked as if he could have done better. After fast early to run the first three in 36 4-ss, Ohmaha (McGrath) was slowing up in 1.16 4-5. Hoyal Abb (Coon) was under restraint while covering half a mile in 51 l-ss, the initial furlong taking 13 4-os. The posterity three-year-old has settled down and is a good mover. King Musk (Markwick) was responsible for a good effort in running a round in 1.39 4-5, the last half-mile in 535. Jack Tar (Green) joined him at the six furlongs, but was going comfortably in front at the finish in 1.20. King Musk, who is to mako his debut over hurdles at Whangarei, will lack nothing in condition. Ringshot (Green) and Oriental Bay (Cameron) were associated over five furlongs in 1.5, the first two being run in 25 4-ss. Both were going well within themselves.
