QUEEN CARNIVAL

FUNCTION AT HUNTLY ENJOYABLE BALL ATTRACTIVE DECORATIONS Lycopodium, nikau palms and punga fern, among which were placed clusters of gaily coloured bullous, made an attractive setting for tho Gold and Green ball held in the Huntly Town Hall last week under the auspices of the Mutual Improvement Association, an auxiliary organisation of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints. The crowning of the winner of tho recent queen carnival was held in conjunction with tho ball. There was a large attendance of dancers, including many visitors. Miss Daisy Thompson (Sports Queen) was the winner of the contest, with Miss Jean Bow ron (Alpine Queen) runner-up, followed by Miss Vera Mason (Glenner Girls' Queen), Miss Veda Berryman (Young Men's Queen) and •Miss Maisie Monio (Blue Bird Queen). The crowning ceremony was performed by the Mayor, Mr. W. C. E. George. Miss Thompson, in a gown of white cloque, over which she wore a cloak of red and gold decorated with gaily coloured lei around her neck, was (preceded to the stage by two little Maori maids in Hawaiian costumes, Worn Tarawhiti and Tamo Ponga, and was attended by Miss Bowron as matron-of-honour and Miss Mason, Miss Berryman and Miss Morno as ladies-in-waiting. During the evening tho five competitors in tlie contest were presented with beautiful gifts from the association. The Mayoress, Mrs. W. C. E. George, was present and wore a frock of blue brocade. After the crowning ceremony an exhibition of the hula dance was given by Miss Lulu Rangi (Hastings) and Mr. Moses Tarawhiti (Huntly West). A sitdown supper was provided later in the evening, the arrangements being supervised by Miss Una Thompson, of Hastings. items by the Maori choir of mixed voices, under the conductorship of Elder Kolly Harris, were greatly appreciated. Among the guests was Mrs. Matthew Cowley, wife of the president of the New Zealand Mission, wearing a frock of black taffetas with corsage spray of sweet peas and roses.
