WAR PREPARATIONS
COMMONWEALTH IN CRISIS MINISTER GIVES DETAILS CANBERRA, Oct. 21 The Minister of Defence, Mr. H. V. ' Thorby, in Parliament to-day detailed the defence preparations that were made in Australia during the recent crisis. He revealed /that the Commonwealth ' had made extensive plans to face war. Armed forces had been prepared for mobilisation.
The defence preparations showed that it ttas a serious weakness to have the headquarters of the Defence Department in Melbourne, and these would be transferred to Canberra. Five hundred cottages would have to be 'Constructed in Canberra to house the members of tho staff and their families.
