REVIEW OF FORM

HAGEN WELL FANCIED TRACK IMPROVED AFTER RAIN INTEREST IN THREE-YEAR-OLDS [BY T£L£OBAfB OWN CORRESPONDENT] WELLINGTON, Friday Tho fields which have paid up should enable tho Wellington Racing Club to offer its patrons another day of firstclass racing, when the spring meeting is continued at Trcnthatn to-morrow. It is a long time since better fields wero carded at Trcntharn in the spring and an important influence in this high aggregate of runners ,is tho excellent condition of the track. It was beautifully cushioned on the first day for horses inclined to soreness and rain, which fell after Thursday's racing would improve it.

.Dominion-wide interest is focussed upon tho Trentham Stakes, which is tho feature event of tho programme, for it brings together for tho first time this season the high-class three-year-olds Defaulter, Gay Son and To Hero. There is not much lino on which relative value of their individual performances can bo assessed. Defaulter, who probably will be favourite, had the best two-year-old record and in two starts this season was beaten by Silver Streak in tho open sprint at Wingatui and then easily won tho Dunedin Guineas, one mile, against poor opposition. Form of Gay Son

Gay Son's record as a three-year-old is best. Following failures at Wanganui and Marton, he won tho Great Northern Guineas, but was relegated to third for boring in tho straight. Then he won at a mile at Ellerslie, carrying 8.8 and running in 1.J37. On Thursday lie was almost in lino with the first three horses in the Shorts Handicap, after hanging out in tho Inst furlong.

Te Hero elected to do his best at Trentham on Thursday and was unlucky not to win the Shorts Handicap outright. Ho carries tho stamp of class and tho race he had is likely to have unproved him. To Hero most likely will bo ridden again by P. Burgess, who was substituted on Thursday aftor C. G. Goulsbro was injured. Other likely runners are Colfort, Surmount, Homily and Peerless, but none has shown form of sufficient merit to entitle them to support against the threo best colts. If any of tho quartet is to create a surprise, it might bo Colfort, who is a horse of considerable promise. Fresh Horses in Hurdles There are five fresh horses in the Rimu Hurdles and the best of them should be Spender and Middle. However, it is difficult to go past first-day form and at the difference in weights Southern Blood may be able to turn tho tables on Silver Sight, although tho latter is in exceptionally good condition and his jumping is not likely to be bettered by any of his opponents. A likely improver on Thursday's form may be Iddo. The largo field of 30 has accepted for the Trial Stakes, in which winners are Screamer, Flame Queen, Hinerawe, Lord Cavendish, Morning Flight, Namara, Toro-Koura, Twenty Grand, War Cloud and Windsor Chief. Recent placed form stands to tho credit of Kindly, Punarua and Chero Amie, and others of known ability aro Beaupartir, Coronation, Old Bill and Good Passage. In a field of such size a good draw and beginning may be essential factors. The handy field of 10 is carded for the Heretaunga Handicap. Accomplice, Nightdress, Erlick, Earl Colossus and Royal Tinge should not be troubled by the distance, and both Erlick and Royal Tinge can be expected to improve on their first-day form. Daniel Defoe is like!v to bo at short odds in the Karitane Handicap and as improvement ctm be expected after his oxperienco on Thursday, he may make his record two wins on end. Tableau. Winning Rival and Submission should all run good races and Lady Drake is a good type of filly, who should bo benefited by her experience in the Welles ley Stakes. Twenty in Chief Handicap The Watkins Handicap has drawn a good-class field of 20, in which there is a wide range of chances. There are several fresh horses, including Kinnoul, W illio Win, Francis Drake, Tiger Gain and .Ned Cuttle. Of those who competed on Thursday, Sly Fox, Boomerang and Dictate should perform well.

Another difficult problem confronts investors in tho Awatea Handicap, in which well-supported candidates will include Gay Cnou, Alunga, Mittie, 3?ollicker, Majority arid the promoted hacks, Florence Mills and Counterblast. Either of the last-named pair might make a forward showing. , The day's racing concludes with the Belmont Handicap, in which there is another big field. The promising Hagen is set 110 easy task, but is confidently expected to maintain his winning sequence. There are pros{>ec:ts also in Rotoma, Phalanx, Ladv .Chat, Royal Star 11., Trebor, White Lady and Dark Eagle. J

HAWERA ACTIVITIES GALLOPS ON THE PLOUGH RACE CALL IN GOOD TRIM [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] HAWERA. Friday Conditions were ideal for training operations at Hawera yesterday morning, when the local candidates for the Waverley meeting were galloped. The plough was in good order. Naughty Marietta (Ryan) completed six furlongs in 1.19 2-5, Kolcako accompanying her over the last half-mile in 525. Kokako is far from an impressive track galloper, showing an inclination to stop quickly, but in his two races to date ho has performed very creditably.

Notium (Sexton) was anxious to do bettor than three-quarter pace while working over a round. Student Prince also worked usefully. Ho promises to strip very fit on Monday and should give a good account of himself in the hurdles.

Lickem (Monklov) shaded Prime Quality (Sexton) over three furlongs in 38s. Both horses are fairly forward. Gwenland (Fryer) completed two rounds pf steady work by recording 41s for three furlongs. Gold Glare (Fryer) was not bustled to traverse five furlongs in 1.8. Captain Bligh (Fryer) occupied 1.7 4-5 over the same ground. Viracious (Chaplin) and Race Boy (Monkley) were on terms at the close of seven furlongs in 1.32 2-5, after running the first three in 38s. Narrator (Cole) strode over five furlongs in 1.6. Silvanus (Farland) began slowly from the six-furlong post and. alter taking nearly 15s for the first furlong, was joined by Race Call (Fryer) # at the live, and the pair ran home in 1.6 1-5. Silvanus bears a bright appearance and she may make a solid showing in the Waverley Cup. Race Call is rapidly approaching his bgst and appears likely to mako an early return to the winning list.
