Forest Jewel led to the mile in 2.31 and won in 3.38 3-5 from Argolis and Vanora, with Great Chum three lengths away. Forest Jewel gave further proof of her solid condition. Argolis had his first hoppled task for some time. Vanora made up ground-in the final stages, and after passing the mile in 2.28, completed the journey \n 3.35. Lucky Love (W. Willetts) led Gipsy Light (G. Cole) past the six furlongs in 1.56 3-5. They were together at the mile, but Lucky Love completed the 10 furlongs easily in 3.5 3-5. Gipsy Light, who recorded 3.6, made a creditable showing. Petite Jewel Buns On Equipoise (S. M. August) and Kewpie's Crest (J. Gee) went away two seconds ahead of Bismuth (A. McGarry) and three seconds before Petite Jewel (W. H. Andrews), with Post Haste goiug two seconds later, on a mile and a-half journey. Bismuth led at the mile in 2.24, and won in 3.31 4-5. He has not been in such good racing condition for some time. The others went satisfactorily. Grand Dame (K. Bell) ran the last mile and a-quarter of two miles in 3.1(5 2-5. The final half, 1.12, was her best. 4 Star Pronto (B. Dyer) showed the way to Kewpie's Triumph (K. Bell) and Bedford (F. Herring) at the mile in 2.27. Bedford drew up to Kewpie's Triumph, but he could not reach Star Pronto, who ran 3.34. The freelegged pacer, who has not done much fast work since the last meeting, has brightened. Bedford made a determined effort in the final stages and. while he ran 1.7 1-5 for the last half, he had no chance with the winner. Stargum (W. Head) hit his straps more smartly than Tommy McElwyn (A. McKenzie) as they jumped away from the mile and a-half, two seconds ahead of Handieapper (G. H. Stubbs), leading to the mile in 2.30. Tommy McElwyn ran to the leader across the top, with Handieapper in hot pursuit, but while he passed Tommy McElwyn, he just failed to overhaul Stargum in 3.38. Stargum was staying on better than usual. In going 3.38 1-5, Handieapper gave one of his best displays for some time in hopplefc, and finished resolutely. Tommy McElwyn, who is not a good track horse, going 3.39. 4 Young Rodney Trots Faultlessly Gav Moko (L. J. Mahoney) worked two miles, trotting the last mile and a-quarter in 3.14, and the final half in 1.16. She went, solidly. Kewprie's Queen (W. Gee), after going easily for six furlongs, ran the next 10 in 3.17, but was never extended, the last half, 1.15, being her best. She has come along well in the last few weeks.

Autumn Lu (G. H. Stubbs) and Bingcn Sun (W. Head) left the mile and a-half two seconds before Young Rodney (L. Laver), but after Bingen Sun had passed the mile in 2.35, Young Rodney took charge and won in • 3.45. He did not make a mistake. Autumn Lu drifted a little at the end of nine furlongs, but came again in the straight to be close up in 3.47 1-5 — ber best effort for a good while. Noble Prince (J. McKendrick) worked strongly over two miles in 5.7, the last six furlongs at a 2.18 rate. He has done much solid work. Mandalay (D. O. Jones), from a standing start worked a mile and aquarter in 3.11. The last half-mile showed 1.10, and she was not taxed. "Unhoppled, Silk Lady (J. Tunnell) ran 10 furlongs in 3.12, the last four in 1.10. The Nelson Tasker mare (W. Willetts) gave an improved* exhibition while trotting a mile and aquarter ib 3.17. Frank Redmond (A. Paton) made no mistakes while trotting a mile and a-half in 4.9, the last half in 1.19.

DERBY CANDIDATES ENGAGEMENTS AT EPSOM Although tho Great Northern Trotting Derby is not run until the Auckland Club's February meeting, five of the candidates are engaged at the coming meeting. They are Davoy Day, Auto Bingfen, Nelson Peart, Kewpie's Jewel, and Princess Linnett. Davey Day and Auto Bingen raced as two-year-olds, and ran second and third respectively to Contender in the Great Northern Trotting Stakes. Davoy Day is a good-looking gelding by Great Parrish from Lady Swithin, both of whom won tho Great Northern Derby. Davey Day is likely to improve, and may prove as good as Contender, who is by Travis Axworthy from Bessie Bingen. x Auto Bingen is a solid colt by Auto Machine from a Nelson Bingen mare, whose dam is bred on successiul American lines Auto Bingen won at tho matinee meeting, but is not properly attuned, his owner adopting a patient policy. Later ho may be the best of the local three-year-olds. Kewpie's Jewel is by Jewel Pointer, whose stock have already done quite well. She had hor first public run at the matinee meeting and, although green, left the impression that she wdl bo useful when more experienced. Nelson Pearl is a promising filly by Nelson Tasker from Black Pearl, who is related to Welcome Pearly dam of Baron Grand. Nelson Pearl had a race in August, and ivas a good second to Auto Bingen at the matinee meeting. Princess Linnett is a very shapely filly by Ringtrue, a son of Travis Axworthy and Bertha Belle, dam of Great Bingen, Poter Bingen, Great Parrish and others, and the English maro, Linnett the Great. Tho latter was brought, to Auckland by F. J. Smith, who sold her to Messrs. McKendrick Brothers, in whoso colours she won races in Smith's hands. '
