THE TIRAU MEETING
Sir, —The people of Matamata are considerably perturbed at. the statement made by Mr. C. G. Scrii^geour — that tho uproar at the meeting at Tirau on September 28 was caused by an organised party from Matamata. If this statement refers to members of tho National Party (and that undoubtedly is the inference) 1 wish togive it an emphatic denial. It is not a. part of the Nationalists' policy to "howl doAvn" their opponents. Tho good folk of Tirau, however, evidently felt justified in showing their disapproval of Mr. Scrimgeour's actions. With regard to his further statement that ho was only a visitor to Tirau and had 110 intention of speaking at the meeting—how does that square witli the fact that a large poster was exhibited as early as September 15 stating that ho would address tho electors? The following is the exact wording on the poster:—-"The Fight Is On. Labour Campaign. A. F. Moncur, Esq., M.P., accompanied by Rev. C. G. Scrimgeour (Scrim) will address the electors in Tirau Town Hall on September 28." I leave it to the public to judge. E. Tamblyn.
Chairman, National Party, Tauranga electorate.
