OBITUARY

MR. H. P. MERRICK Many memories of early Auckland were retained by Mr. H. P. Merrick, of Kaukapakapa,' who died in the Auckland Hospital yesterday, at the age of 83. Born in Onehunga Mr. Merrick, when a boy was one of the first Herald runners. In the early mornifigfj he used to trav«l along the narrow track between Auckland and Onehunga, " carrying his bundle of papers for delivery in the suburb. Mr. Merrick often spoke of incidents he remembered during tho military occupation bf Auckland and of such events as the wreck 75 years ago of H.M.S. Orpheus on the M&nukau bar, when 189 lives were lost. After residing in Onehunga for nearly 20 years he moved to the North and was engaged in milling kauri for some -time.
